Week 4: Can foreign reality TV shows create a significant impact on attracting online communities when imported to Vietnam? 

Reality TV shows have been gaining greater shares of viewership across different audience groups largely because of their potential that widen the avenue for the sharing of opinions and driving argumentative discourse (Deller 2019, p. 153). The shows are inclusive of many forms such as gamedocs, dating programs, talent shows, and reality sitcoms amongst others (Murray and Ouellette). The Vietnamese market has also seen a significant penetration of foreign television programs. The recent reality TV formats acquired for broadcast in Vietnam include: 'Running Man,' '2 Days 1 Night', 'Brother Overcame a Thousand Thorns,' 'Street Woman Fighter.' These shows were received with phenomenal success in their home countries, where they left a deep impression on their viewers. A question remains whether they would keep their phenomenal appeal when they are adapted to the Vietnamese culture. 

Street Woman Fighter Vietnam (Nữ hoàng vũ đạo đường phố) is a real dance competition adapted from the original Korean format. Its first episode was released on July 27th, and it features six competing crews including So Fire, F.E.D, OOPS!, HanoiXGirls, SSWarriorZ, and Salad. All dance crews contain well-recognised female dancers of the industry with different styles and genres.

Korea has been known as the birthplace of a variety of well-known reality TV shows. Understanding that Vietnam has the potential, with a large number of talented female dancers whose ability in both choreography and competitive dancing is equal to the international standard, the producers of the original show decided to choose Vietnam as the first foreign host for this program. This initiative aims to provide a platform for young dancers to showcase their talents and creativity (Phan Trai 2024).

In order to set a strong and long-lasting foundation the show has strived to maintain the original format to attract viewers who are used to the former Korean version. However, since the production is now based in Vietnam, it has to fit the local culture. An instance of this is the performance of the dance crew F.E.D during the Mega Crew mission, in which they used Vietnamese music and set up the formation in a star shape, representing the emblem on the national flag. Specifically, the emergence of well-known faces in the Vietnamese entertainment industry, such as popular judges and master hosts Hari Won, Diep Lam Anh, Gil Le,... has contributed to its appeal and viewership.

The show broadcast both through the HTV7 channel and YouTube, enjoyed an incredibly active online audience. This is somewhat understandable considering the quality of social media viewership, which essentially tends to be a communicative practice, best linked with the scheduling of a live show (Deller 2019, p. 157). Consequently, it places viewers in a position where they have topics of commonality they can discuss each week on various social media platforms. It is a sense of collective empowerment that provides greater ease and immediacy, especially when they can identify and unite behind a common interest such as fandom for a television series (L'Hoiry 2019, p. 11). Notably, the diverse responses to individual performances can elicit a whole gamut of opinions; where one may show eagerness, the same feelings might not be shared by another person. These differences in views mostly result in the creation of different online communities based on a wide array of outlooks.

In short, Vietnam opens a very huge opportunity to produce reality TV shows based on foreign formats, owing to the diverse audience demographics in the country. However, more is indeed required to be done to enhance quality and creativity by the producers themselves to catch more viewership in the long term.

HI hello i meant to answer this last night but. well. y'know how it is with mental illness.

anyway

so the main fictional gay people living in my head rent free right now are arthur huffman and noah phan, the protagonists of my wip for we are both fragile things.

i have a LOT of thoughts about both of them and i'm honestly not sure where to begin, so i'll just talk a little about them both at the start of the story.

arthur huffman is a white, cis, gay man from somewhere in northern texas. he comes from an upper middle-class family that isn't quite conservative, but they're definitely... not great, and at the start of the story he's struggling with a lot of internalized homophobia due to how he was raised. his parents also walk the thin between "not outwardly abusive" and "not good loving parents". they love him less as a person and more as an investment for their legacy and their future.

he has some serious trauma and is terrified of failure, abandonment, and disappointing his parents, but he covers it all up with a sweet smile and a charming, easygoing attitude. even if he's not the most educated on a lot of social issues, he's very much willing and excited to learn and support those around him. arthur is very outgoing and loves to befriend people who look like they're having a hard time, just so he can try and put a smile on their face. if he can't make himself happy, he'd like to make others happy at least.

at the start of the story, arthur is 20 (almost 21) and a junior in college, attending the same university (which i actually still need to name oops) as noah. arthur has recently changed his major from engineering to communications, specializing in journalism. his parents aren't happy with him for that despite this being a great decision for his mental and emotional wellbeing, so he's trying to get back on their good side.

noah phan is an asian-american (specifically vietnamese), trans, gay man from somewhere in western montana. he comes from a rather small, but very liberal/left-leaning community and was raised by a loving single mom after his father passed away when he was young. noah has never doubted that his mother loves him, but he struggles deeply with his identity and the fact that his mother has suffered and sacrificed so much for him and his younger sister. he wants to be strong and support his family, but he doesn't know where to start, and at the beginning of the story he's very much fallen into the habit of pushing his own problems aside so his mother has less to worry about.

noah has a serious case of depression, and at the start of fragile things he has only recently realized that he is trans and is dealing with that. however, he is still very much in the closet, and he hasn't told anyone except a couple of people he talks to online through forums and such. he feels isolated and has trouble reaching out to others, which has made it hard for him to make friends. at the start of the story, he has a very small friend group, made up of his roommate nina, her ex-girlfriend emma (they ended on good terms and are still close), and a classmate named tina. part of him is happy with the small friend group, but he still feels incredibly lonely.

at the start of the story, noah is 18 (almost 19) and a freshman/first-year in college at the same university as arthur. he hasn't decided his major just yet and is overwhelmed by all the options, but he likes the idea of becoming a teacher someday, if he can. noah loves children and loves interacting with them, and he thinks he might make a good teacher if he can just get over some of his anxiety first.

arthur and noah meet in the spring semester of noah's freshman year, in an Intro to Sociology course. arthur notices noah sitting alone in the back of the room looking sad and nervous, and he decides to plop down next to him and strike up a conversation.

okay this got a little longer than i meant for it to, so here's a rapid-fire little list of facts:

noah's favorite music genre is modern rock, whereas arthur's favorite is (predictably) country. they learn to appreciate each other's music taste more as they get to know each other.

arthur has a really good singing voice.

noah actually dreamed of being an author as a child, but he doesn't feel like that's a realistic goal for him. he still writes in his spare time, though.

noah is taller than arthur. i need to emphasize this. noah is 6'1" (~185 cm) and arthur is 5'11" (~180 cm).

when they start the story, arthur has also recently broken up with his latest girlfriend, because yes i'm gonna go ahead and establish this but arthur definitely tried to date women because he was THAT in denial about being gay. he's still gay though, make no mistake.

noah knows logically that his mother would probably be, at most, a little confused but ultimately accepting of his gender. however, he's so determined to make things as easy for her as possible that he's terrified of saying anything. no i'm not projecting <3

arthur really likes pokemon, but noah doesn't understand it. cue arthur very excitedly and enthusiastically explaining pokemon to noah, who's nodding and smiling but still doesn't quite get it. (he very much gets arthur pokemon platinum for his birthday one year <3)

okay that's all. i love these two so fucking much <3

(also yeah, noah later changes his name to ink nikodemos by the time bleeding over eden begins, but he does so to distance himself from the trauma he experiences relating to arthur's death. because ultimately noah phan died with arthur huffman, even if it wasn't a physical death.)

I have just watched the PotO TV miniseries adaptation of 1990 !

It was very lovely and I really liked all the traditional french songs incorporated inside !! (also cherik ahah)

Sadly the songs are quite hard to find back or even to identify,, So I decided to try to regroup them and type them if possible in that post so maybe it can help some people fr some phan creations or even just sing them along the movie huhu ~ (also that way i can escape the stress of my oral in few hours,,)

Moreover, while I searched for the songs, I noticed the movie tended to modify/altern the lyrics most of the time, so I wrote the one sung in the movie by preference and the original is quoted so you can search for the original lyrics by yourself.

1 - from one to five stars how would you rate your writing? 

i would put myself at a 3.5-4 stars. i enjoy it a lot and i know i have some good ideas but i say a lot of shit that doesn’t make sense to people who aren’t in my head, so i definitely have some room for improvement

6 - what element of writing do you find comes easily? 

introspection, it is so much easier for me to write someone’s thoughts and feelings than to write dialogue or interaction. i love exploring what happens inside someone’s head

7 - what element of writing do you struggle with? 

dialogue, and in particular just getting-to-know-each-other dialogue. that was an issue when i was writing idk why: these two characters were falling in love, but they didn’t ever talk about anything because im terrible at that kind of dialogue lmao 

25 - have you ever daydreamed about side adventures/spin-offs for your fics? 

yes! i’ve considered tying my dog fic series with my parent!phan series before, because i would love parent-dog parent dnp content (although i feel like the amelia series is too far in to add wilbur now oop), and i loved adding extra little bits to idk why while i was writing it. i think having a lot of stuff happening in the same universe is always really fun to explore and read, and i definitely want to do more side adventure-type fics in the future as well

hey kat! idk who else to talk to about this but i’m 16 and i’m writing fanfiction, which i know is normal, i just have been worried about my mom finding it since my brother told her about my phan account lmao. i’ve tried to be careful and stop writing near her but sometimes i can’t help it and she asks what i’m doing. so idk i’m just really nervous she’ll find it cjcjjdjsjsj what do i do

boy oh boy, have you come to the right person. i’ve been writing fanfic in secret since i was like 12 lol. i’ve gotten caught reading and writing a few times over the years, please, learn from my mistakes. idk if you actually want real advice or not, but here comes some of the shit i’ve learned over the years.

1) incognito/selectively deleting history is your friend. i started fanfic back in the days where you could either erase your whole history, or leave it there for everyone to find. so it was hella suspish when the fam came home and the shared computer had the history wiped but wtf you gonna do? let your fam find 26 pages of “fanfic.net/harrypotter” as the most recent searches when they come home from the grocery store?

2) if you’re writing around your fam, always have two docs open. one that’s actual creative writing/school essay/etc open, one that is your fic. if they get too close, just tab over to the parent-approved doc and type there for a minute. plus, if they ask what you’re doing, you can honestly say “writing” and then show them the non fanfic thing that you’re writing. and i’m sure it goes without saying, but don’t leave the fanfic doc opened on your phone/computer (how my mom found my embarrassing lily/james fanfic i used to write). it doesn’t hurt to leave the other thing open though, you know, really rub in that that’s what you’re working on. 

3) keep your writing safe. consider password protecting your document if you write in word. if you write in google docs, bury that shit in a folder, and turn off the “suggest recent docs” feature (my phanfic is buried in a tunnel of five folders). actually, same advice if you’re writing on your laptop. bury that shit in a chain of folders. in both cases, make the folders boring sounding, and label the documents something mundane that isn’t GAY SMUT XXXXXXXX.  maybe like “park” or something somewhat identifying to you but not to anyone else (all of my chapters for ly are are just “ly #”)

4) your mom knowing about your phan account sucks butt idk what to tell you there. does she know your username? because that’s much worse than if she just knows you have one. if she just knows you have one, make a fake mom-friendly one and keep that opened around her, maybe even let her see that username, so she knows that it’s just like gifs and screenshots from vids, not nswf phanart and pages and pages of phanfic and -- oops is this about me or you lol?

i’m 26, have my own password protected computer, live alone, and still do half of this shit lol. it got engrained in my from a young age lol

(oh and also, never print out fanfic you’re reading and leave it around your house. i didn’t, but a friend did and wow did that end badly for both of us. 2005 was wild)

The stress was starting to get to Phil.

Things between him and Dan were awkward. Conversations felt forced and Dan had taken to sleeping in his own room now. They weren’t arguing, though Phil would much prefer that over the awkwardness. He didn’t blame Dan for it, as he was sure he was doing the same thing back. It felt like they had a million eyes on them now, and in a sense, they did. Phil ignored most of them, trying not to let them effect him, while Dan was fighting back. They were both far too aware of everything now and it had pushed a gap in their relationship.

Phil sighed, checking the scene he was editing again. The scene was obviously forced and lacked Phil’s natural enthusiasm. He remembered the day he had been filming it, he hadn’t been feeling too well. It had been happening more and more often recently.

Giving up, Phil saved the video before closing the program. He leaned back in the office chair, disappointment settling in him. Phil would probably have to refilm the scene, which meant more time. The more time Phil spent on videos, the more restless the fans became. He already had them breathing down his back about phan, he didn’t want to deal with their complaints about the lack of videos as well. His head constantly hurt from the tension and he found himself unable to sleep well at night.

All the stress piled up in his stomach until it started to ache from the pressure of it all. But Phil didn’t have time to deal with a troublesome stomach; he had other things to do, like prepare for the radio show, pay the bills, film the scenes needed for his video, and many other important tasks. He also needed to try to reconcile with Dan and have him come sleep in the same bed again. Phil hated the emptiness and not being able to cuddle Dan whenever he liked.

Phil got up and headed down to the lounge, where Dan sat editing a video of his own. He glanced up when Phil walked in, then returned to his video. Phil sat down at the table where the monthly rent was laid out, waiting to be read over. His stomach turned as he stared the papers down and he felt nauseous. Money always stressed him out and now even more so with their gained attention. It needed to be done, as much as Phil would like to pretend it didn’t exist.

He had finished sorting everything out when Dan came up to him. Phil looked up at him and smiled.

“Hey,” Phil greeted.

Dan smiled back, though it was forced. “Are you going to make dinner?”

The thought of food didn’t sit well with Phil’s stomach, but he figured he’d only make enough for Dan. It’d be a nice gesture and hopefully Dan would take it as an invitation to start talking to Phil again. “Sure. What do you want?”

“Stir fry?”

Phil nodded, standing up to head to the kitchen. “One stir fry dinner coming up.”

This got Dan to roll his eyes fondly. “Don’t burn the house down. I’ll be editing in my bedroom if you need anything.”

Phil nodded and walked to the kitchen, pulling out the ingredients. While it was cooking, Phil leaned against the counter and rubbed his upset stomach. If things weren’t so tense now, Phil would have gone to Dan and whined about his stomach. Dan would have made him tea and cuddled him better.

Now, however, Phil feared that the only thing that would result from going to Dan was another argument and Dan accusing Phil of being childish.

Phil quickly finished up Dan’s dinner, not bothering to make enough for if he got hungry later. He dished the finished meal out onto a plate, grabbed a fork, and carefully made his way to Dan’s room. Inside, Dan was sitting on his laptop, scrolling through some mysterious website unknown to Phil.

“Here you go, my good sir,” Phil teased, handing the plate off to Dan.

Dan gladly took the plate, frowning when he saw that Phil didn’t have one. “Are you going to eat all by yourself?"

“U-um,” Phil stuttered, “not exactly? I mean, I’m not eating now.”

“Why not? The food won’t be warm for long.”

Phil’s stomach turned at the thought of food once again. Phil shrugged. “I have to finish up some emails, sorry.”

Dan didn’t look convinced, but he let it go. A tense silence filled the room before Phil finally left.

Phil went back into the lounge with every intent to follow through with what he said, but his stomach had different plans. Instead of scrolling through email after email about youtube and copyright, Phil ended up laying on his side on the couch, clutching his stomach helplessly as it cramped.

Phil whimpered, burying his face into the couch cushion. His stomach grumbled, telling him off for not caring for himself. He laid there for a while, feeling absolutely miserable and lonely. The nausea was slowly becoming too much and Phil feared he was going throw up when he heard Dan calling his name.

“Phil?” Dan’s voice echoed from the hallway.

Phil merely hummed in response, too sick to care about the possibility of another argument.

He heard the lounge door open. “Phil?” Dan’s voice instantly became more worried when he saw Phil curled up on the couch. “Phil, what’s wrong?”

Dan walked over and kneeled down in front of Phil, resting a hand on Phil’s cheek gently. Phil nuzzled into the hand, immediately soaking up any affection he could get.

“My stomach…” Phil muttered. He rubbed it softly, trying to soothe the nausea and prevent himself from accidentally throwing up on Dan.

Dan frowned. “Are you coming down with the flu?” He felt Phil’s forehead for a temperature, but he seemed fine.

“No.”

“Did you eat something bad?”

Phil shook his head. “I think it’s stress.”

Phil was expecting some cold retaliation or for Dan to tell him that he’s stressed too and a stomachache wasn’t an excuse.

What he didn’t expect was for Dan to coo and instantly begin fussing over Phil. He pressed a kiss to Phil’s forehead and softly pushed Phil’s hand aside so he could rub Phil’s stomach for him. His other hand began to play with Phil’s hair, instantly relaxing him.

Not that Phil was complaining.

“Baby, why didn’t you come to me?” Dan whispered.

Phil melted at the affectionate name. “I didn’t want to make you worried or angry at me.”

Dan shook his head. “I’m sorry, you shouldn’t feel that way. I’ll always want to care for you.”

“Thank you.” Phil craned his neck so he could place a kiss on Dan’s wrist, too lazy to properly reach out and kiss him.

“Anytime. Now, how does a warm bath sound? Afterwards, you can try some soup if your tummy is feeling better.”

Phil smiled shakily. “That sounds wonderful.”

After a warm bath and a little bit of soup that warmed Phil’s stomach, the two ended up cuddling on Dan’s bed. Phil was curled into Dan, his head laying on Dan’s chest and hands drawing little patterns across it. Dan had his arms wrapped tightly around Phil and his face was buried in Phil’s hair, inhaling his scent.

Phil’s stomach still had a dull ache to it, but he wasn’t paying attention to it. Instead, he was enjoying the warmth and feeling of being in Dan’s arms after being fussed over.

“You’re mine,” Dan mumbled, pressing light kisses into Phil’s hair. “My baby. My Phil.”

Phil couldn’t deny the rush of love and happiness that flooded his chest as he listened to Dan. It felt so good and relaxing and Phil was so in love with Dan.

“I feel properly fussed over,” Phil giggled.

“You deserve it. I’ve been a shitty boyfriend lately and it’s not fair to you.”

Phil hummed in agreement. “You’re making up for it. I know things are hard, but I don’t want us to end up like we were at the beginning of the year. I love you so much, Dan, I don’t want to nearly lose you again.”

Dan’s grip tightened around Phil. “I promise, we’re going to make this work. I love you too, more than you can imagine.”

Dan held Phil tightly, showering him in kisses and compliments, until Phil slowly drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep. They still had a long way to go, but Phil knew now that they were going to be okay.

Day 20: The Time in Third Grade 

"We both bumped into each other under some mistletoe and kissed but it turns out you’re the kid from third grade who would tie my shoelaces together and I still hate you for that.”

Day 21: Stuck in an Elevator

"I saw you trying to hit the ‘door close’ button in the elevator but I made it and then I pushed every single button to make you late for work. Now we’re stuck in this elevator as it stops at every single floor and I don’t know what to say other than “you started it”.”

Day 22: Flu and Sore Throats 

Dan wakes up with a sore throat and no voice and Phil takes care of him. Based on the time Dan lost his voice and they filmed a Charades video.

Day 23: Let’s Get Married (Sequel to ‘We’re a Family’ and ‘Time to Move In’)

A year after getting engaged, Dan and Phil were finally ready to get married.

Day 24: Love Actually 

Dan and Phil are stand-ins for movies and meet during scenes that involve nakedness and sex simulation. On set, they become friends and fall for each other. In real life, both of them are painfully shy and struggle to ask each other out.

Dan and Phil are complete strangers but their dogs are not going to stand for that for much longer.
